Meditation for the Second Sunday in Advent

O Lord, raise up, we pray, your power and come among us, and with great might, help us; that while through our sins and wickedness we are grievously hindered in running the race that is set before us, your bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen!

Processional Hymn

O Come, All Ye Faithful (379)

O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant!

O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;

Come and behold Him, Born the king of angels;

O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Highest, most holy,Light of Light eternal,

Born of a virgin, a mortal He comes;

Son of the Father, Now in flesh appearing!

O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation,

Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!

Glory to God, In the highest:

O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, Born this happy morning;

Jesus, to Thee be glory giv'n!

Word of the Father, Now in flesh appearing!

O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord

Invocation

Pastor         En el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo.

All               Amen.

Confession and Forgiveness

Pastor         If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

All               But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Pastor         Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

People        Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

Pastor         Cristo, ten piedad de nosotros.

People        Cristo, ten piedad de nosotros.

Pastor         Señor, ten piedad de nosotros

People        Señor, ten piedad de nosotros

Pastor         Let us then confess our sins to God our Father:

All               Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Pastor         Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

All               Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Pastor         Let us pray

All               Almighty God, purify our hearts and minds, that when your Son Jesus Christ comes again as judge and savior, we may be ready to receive him, who is our Lord and our God. Amen!

Malachi 3:1-4

The Lord Almighty answers, “I will send my messenger to prepare the way for me. Then the Lord you are looking for will suddenly come to his Temple. The messenger you long to see will come and proclaim my covenant.” But who will be able to endure the day when he comes? Who will be able to survive when he appears? He will be like strong soap, like a fire that refines metal. He will come to judge like one who refines and purifies silver. As a metalworker refines silver and gold, so the Lord’s messenger will purify the priests, so that they will bring to the Lord the right kind of offerings. Then the offerings which the people of Judah and Jerusalem bring to the Lord will be pleasing to him, as they used to be in the past.

This is the word of the Lord.

All               Thanks be to God.

Philippians 1:3-11

I thank my God for you every time I think of you; and every time I pray for you all, I pray with joy because of the way in which you have helped me in the work of the gospel from the very first day until now. And so I am sure that God, who began this good work in you, will carry it on until it is finished on the Day of Christ Jesus. You are always in my heart! And so it is only right for me to feel as I do about you. For you have all shared with me in this privilege that God has given me, both now that I am in prison and also while I was free to defend the gospel and establish it firmly. God is my witness that I am telling the truth when I say that my deep feeling for you all comes from the heart of Christ Jesus himself. I pray that your love will keep on growing more and more, together with true knowledge and perfect judgement, so that you will be able to choose what is best. Then you will be free from all impurity and blame on the Day of Christ. Your lives will be filled with the truly good qualities which only Jesus Christ can produce, for the glory and praise of God.

This is the word of the Lord.

All               Thanks be to God.

Luke 3:1-6

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the third chapter.

All               Glory to You, O Lord.

It was the fifteenth year of the rule of the Emperor Tiberius; Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip was ruler of the territory of Iturea and Trachonitis; Lysanias was ruler of Abilene, and Annas and Caiaphas were high priests. At that time the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert. So John went throughout the whole territory of the River Jordan proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the prophet Isaiah: “Someone is shouting in the desert: ‘Get the road ready for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel! Every valley must be filled up, every hill and mountain leveled off. The winding roads must be made straight, and the rough paths made smooth. The whole human race will see God’s salvation!’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All               Praise to you, O Christ

Creed

All               I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Kid Sermon

In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found; He is my light, my strength, my song;

This Cornerstone, this solid ground,

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

What heights of love, what depths of peace,

When fears are stilled, when strivings cease:

My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe;

This gift of love and righteousness,

Scorned by the ones He came to save;

‘Till on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied,

For every sin on Him was laid, here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay, light of the world by darkness slain;

Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again.

And as He stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me

For I am His, and He is mine, bought by the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death: this is the power of Christ in me;

From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny,

No power of hell, no scheme of man can ever pluck me from His hand

‘Till He returns, or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

Pastor         Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us to faithfully eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us to in His own testament. Gather us together from the ends of the earth to celebrate, with all the faithful, the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone be all glory, honor, and worship, now and forever. Amen!

Welcome to St. Paul Lutheran! We are glad you are here today!

Today we celebrate the first Sunday in Advent. Advent is Latin for “coming.” It celebrates a great truth and hope of our faith – that Christ has come, and Christ is coming back! Just as the coming of Jesus as a baby in Bethlehem took everyone by surprise, though it had long been predicted, so too the coming of Jesus in glory will no doubt take everyone by surprise. Here at St. Paul, we place a large wreath at the front to represent the four Sundays of Advent as we anticipate and prepare for Christmas. The first Sunday in Advent commemorates the longing of Israel for the Kingdom of God. Thanks be to God for His comfort and love – His love always finds a Way!

In this service we will celebrate a sacred ritual of the Christian Church called The Holy Eucharist. In this rite we recall the last meal of Jesus with his disciples, and we recognize him in the breaking of the bread. Though our faith is grounded in history, this liturgy is not merely a nostalgic looking back at the past: it is a celebration and recognition that in this meal our Lord Jesus is truly present with us now in the bread and the wine. We cling to the hope of final resurrection that will be ours when the universe is fully redeemed and restored in Him. All baptized Christians who have a sincere sorrow for their sin and see in this holy mystery the true body and blood of Christ are invited to receive Holy Communion!

Meditation for the First Sunday in Advent

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen!

Greeting and Welcome

The congregation stands and faces the back of the sanctuary.

We begin with a procession as the cross leads the way, representing our life in Christ – our journey from death to life. Some bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of salvation.

Processional Hymn

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (357)

O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, Thou Wisdom from on high, Who ord'rest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show, And teach us in her ways to go.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, Thou Branch of Jesse's tree, Free them from Satan's tyranny
That trust Thy mighty pow'r to save,
And give them vict'ry o'er the grave.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, Thou Key of David, come, And open wide our heav'nly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, Thou Dayspring from on high, And cheer us by Thy drawing nigh;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death's dark shadows put to flight.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, Desire of nations, bind In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Shall come to thee, O Israel!

Jeremiah 33:14-16

The Lord said, “The time is coming when I will fulfill the promise that I made to the people of Israel and Judah. 15At that time I will choose as king a righteous descendant of David. That king will do what is right and just throughout the land. 16The people of Judah and of Jerusalem will be rescued and will live in safety. The city will be called ‘The Lord Our Salvation

1 Thessalonians 3:9-13

Now we can give thanks to our God for you. We thank him for the joy we have in his presence because of you. Day and night we ask him with all our heart to let us see you personally and supply what is needed in your faith.  May our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus prepare the way for us to come to you! May the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow more and more and become as great as our love for you. In this way he will strengthen you, and you will be perfect and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all who belong to him.

This is the word of the Lord.

All                   Thanks be to God.

Luke 21:25-36

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty first chapter.

All                   Glory to You, O Lord.

There will be strange things happening to the sun, the moon, and the stars. On earth whole countries will be in despair, afraid of the roar of the sea and the raging tides. People will faint from fear as they wait for what is coming over the whole earth, for the powers in space will be driven from their courses. Then the Son of Man will appear, coming in a cloud with great power and glory. When these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your salvation is near.” Then Jesus told them this parable: “Think of the fig tree and all the other trees. When you see their leaves beginning to appear, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see these things happening, you will know that the Kingdom of God is about to come. Remember that all these things will take place before the people now living have all died. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. “Be on your guard! Don’t let yourselves become occupied with too much feasting and drinking and with the worries of this life, or that Day may suddenly catch you like a trap. For it will come upon all people everywhere on earth. Be on the alert and pray always that you will have the strength to go safely through all those things that will happen and to stand before the Son of Man.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All                   Praise to you, O Christ

Kid Sermon

Here I am Lord

I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry.

All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save.

I, who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.

Who will bear the light to them? Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.

                I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people's pain.

I have wept for love of them. They turn away.

I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone.

I will speak my Word to them. Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.

                I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame.

I will set a feast for them; My hand will save.

Finest bread I will provide 'til their hearts be satisfied.

I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.

                I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

People:  You know us, Lord.  You know our great need and our unworthiness.  Yet you have loved us with an undying love.  You have breathed into us your Spirit and raised us to life in union with your Son, Jesus.

Pastor:    You have called us your children and have given us a purpose.

People:  You have planted faith and hope within us, and have given us love to share.

Pastor:    Your mercy and daily blessings are in plain view for all to see:  In the air we breath, in the food we eat, in the friends and family with whom we share our lives, in your Word which you have given us and which points us to life in Christ.

People:  How constant is your love, O Lord!

[Silent Prayer: A moment to consider the many blessings each has received from God's gracious hand.]

Pastor:   All praise and all glory be to you, O Lord!

People: THANKS BE TO GOD!

Hymn of Praise    "We Praise You, O God, Our Redeemer, Creator" (# 785)

We praise you, O God, our Redeemer, Creator; in grateful devotion our tribute we bring.

We lay it before you, we kneel and adore you; we bless your holy name, glad praises we sing.

We worship you, God of our fathers, we bless you; through trial and tempest our guide you have been.

When perils o’ertake us, you will not forsake us; and with your help, O Lord, our struggles we win.

With voices united our praises we offer and gladly our songs of thanksgiving we raise.

With you, Lord, beside us, your strong arm will guide us. To you, our great Redeemer, forever be praise!

The First Reading: Psalm 100

1 Sing to the Lord, all the earth! 2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs! 3 Acknowledge that the Lord is God. He made us, and we belong to him; we are his people, we are his flock. 4 Enter the temple gates with thanksgiving, go into its courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise him. 5 The Lord is good; his love is eternal and his faithfulness continues through all generations.

The Second Reading:    Philippians 4:6-13

6Don’t worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. 7And God’s peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.  8 In conclusion, my brothers and sisters, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. 9Put into practice what you learned and received from me, both from my words and from my actions. And the God who gives us peace will be with you.10In my life in union with the Lord it is a great joy to me that after so long a time you once more had the chance of showing that you care for me. I don’t mean that you had stopped caring for me—you just had no chance to show it. 11And I am not saying this because I feel neglected, for I have learned to be satisfied with what I have. 12I know what it is to be in need and what it is to have more than enough. I have learned this secret, so that anywhere, at any time, I am content, whether I am full or hungry, whether I have too much or too little. 13I have the strength to face all conditions

by the power that Christ gives me.

The Gospel Reading:     Luke 17:11-19

11 As Jesus made his way to Jerusalem, he went along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12He was going into a village when he was met by ten men suffering from a dreaded skin disease. They stood at a distance 13and shouted, “Jesus! Master! Take pity on us!”  14 Jesus saw them and said to them, “Go and let the priests examine you.” On the way they were made clean. 15When one of them saw that he was healed, he came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16He threw himself to the ground at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. 17Jesus said, “There were ten men who were healed; where are the other nine? 18Why is this foreigner the only one who came back to give thanks to God?” 19And Jesus said to him, “Get up and go; your faith has saved you.”

The Confession of Faith       (The First Article of the Apostles’ Creed and Luther’s Explanation)

Pastor:   I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

People:  I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that he has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears and all my senses, and still preserves them; Also clothing and shoes, meat and drink, house and home, wife and children, fields, cattle, and all my goods; that he richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life; That he defends me against all danger, and guards and protects me from all evil; And all this purely out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me; For all which it is my duty to thank and praise, to serve and obey him. This is most certainly true.

The Hymn:  "Himno de Alabanza"

1) Entonemos un canto de alabanza, entonemos un cántico al Señor,

    Entonemos salmodias celestiales, entonemos mil cánticos de amor,

   Entonemos salmodias celestiales, entonemos mil cánticos de amor.

2) Let us sing to the Lord a song of praises, let us raise all our voices to the Lord.

    Let us sing psalms of glory unto heaven, let us join in a thousand songs of love.

    Let us sing psalms of glory unto heaven, let us join in a thousand songs of love.

3) Demos gracias al Padre por la vida, demos gracias al Padre por Jesús.

    Y sigamos la senda de la gloria con la carga divina de la cruz

    Y sigamos la senda de la gloria con la carga divina de la cruz.

4) Glory give unto God for every morning, for God's blessings o'erflowing and for love,

    For our God in the goodness of His mercy gave us life, life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

    For our God in the goodness of His mercy gave us life, life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Oh, praise him!  Oh, praise, him!  Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

    Let all things their Creator bless and worship him in humbleness.  Oh, praise him.  Alleluia!

    Oh, praise the Father, praise the Son, And praise the Spirit, Three in One.

The Receiving of Offerings

The Prayer for our Nation

The Hymn:    "God Bless Our Native Land" (# 965)

   God bless our native land; firm may it ever stand through storm and night.

   When the wild tempests rave, Ruler of wind and wave, do thou our country save by thy great might.

   So shall our prayers arise to God above the skies, on whom we wait.

   Thou who art ever nigh, guarding with watchful eye, to thee aloud we cry:  God save the state!

Sharing Gifts from Jesus (Holy Communion)

[Communion notes: In the sacred meal of Holy Communion, it is our living Lord himself who serves, as, in the bread and wine, he truly gives us his Body and Blood, in ways beyond our understanding, so that we might remember his death for us and experience again right now the reality of his forgiveness, strength, and love as his gift. Baptized followers of Jesus who have been instructed in the meaning of this sacrament and believe this, and who desire to live for Jesus, are invited to take part in this meal.]

Preparation:

People:  We come before you, Lord, in our need and our sin.  Forgive our self-serving and our lack of love towards others.  Heal our blindness and our fear. Strengthen our weak faith. Set us free by your forgiveness and love so that we might serve you.

[Moment for Silent Prayer]

Pastor:    In the name of Jesus who has conquered both sin and death for you, and by your faith in Him, I declare to you that your sins are forgiven. The burden of your inadequacy and failure is removed. This is the Lord's doing, and the reality of your faith! You are free to be the people of God!

Pastor:   The Lord be with you.

People:  And also with you.

Pastor:   Lift up your hearts.

People:  We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor:   Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People:  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Pastor:   It is truly right, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give You thanks, holy Father, eternal God. From sunrise to sunset this day is holy, for Christ has risen from the tomb and has scattered the darkness of death with light that will not fade. The risen Lord walks with us and makes himself known in the breaking of the bread. And though the night will overtake the day, you summon us to live in endless light, the unending Sabbath of the Lord. So, with choirs of angels and with the heavenly host, we proclaim your glory!

People:  Amen!

The Prayer of Thanksgiving

Pastor:    Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy, we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Amen!

The Lamb of God

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace.

The Consecration

The Acclamation and The Invitation

Pastor:    As often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again.

People:  Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Pastor:   Behold the Lamb of God, behold Jesus who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

People:  Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.

The Prayers of Thanksgiving

The Hymn    “Now Thank We All Our God”  (# 895)

   Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices,

   Who wondrous things has done, in whom his world rejoices;

   Who from our mother’s arms has blest us on our way

   With countless gifts of love and still is ours today.

   Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,

   With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us

   And keep us in his grace and guide us when preplexed

   And free us from all harm in this world and the next!

   All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given,

   The Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven,

   The one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore;

   For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

The Blessing
