A Meditation for Christmas Eve

Eternal God, who made this most holy night to shine with the brightness of your one true light: bring us, who have known the revelation of that light on earth, to see the radiance of your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The Welcome (La Binevenida)

The congregation stands and faces the back of the sanctuary. We begin with a procession as the cross leads the way, representing our life in Christ – our journey from death to life. Some bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of salvation

Processional Hymn

O Come, all Ye Faithful (379)

O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant!

O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold Him, Born the king of angels;
O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Highest, most holy, Light of Light eternal,
Born of a virgin, a mortal He comes;

Son of the Father, Now in flesh appearing!

O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God, In the highest:

O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, Born this happy morning;
Jesus, to Thee be glory giv'n!
Word of the Father, Now in flesh appearing!

O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Invocation and Confession

La Invocación Y La Confesión

En el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo.

All     Amen.

Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you

All     and also with you.

Christ the Light of the World has come to dispel the darkness of our hearts. Let us turn to the Light and confess our sins:

Silence is kept.

          Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

All     Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

          Cristo, ten piedad de nosotros.

All     Cristo, ten piedad de nosotros.

          Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

All     Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

God our Father, you sent your Son full of grace and truth: forgive our failure to receive him.

All     Lord, have mercy.

Jesus our Savior, you were born in poverty and laid in a manger: forgive our greed and rejection of your ways.

All     Christ, have mercy.

Spirit of God, your servant Mary responded joyfully to your call: forgive the hardness of our hearts.

All     Lord, have mercy.

May the God of all healing and forgiveness draw you to himself, that you may behold the glory of his Son, the Word made flesh, and be cleansed from all your sins, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All     Amen.

Prayer of the Day

All     Eternal God, in the stillness of this night you sent your Son to pierce the world’s darkness with the light of salvation: give to the earth the peace that we long for and fill our hearts with the joy of heaven through our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Angels We Have Heard on High (368)

Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o'er the plains,

And the mountains in reply, Echoing their joyous strains.

Glo---ri-a in excelsis Deo. Glo---ri-a in excelsis Deo.

Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong?

What the gladsome tidings be, Which inspire your heav'nly song?

Glo---ri-a in excelsis Deo. Glo---ri-a in excelsis Deo.

Come to Bethlehem and see, Him whose birth the angels sing;

Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

Glo---ri-a in excelsis Deo. Glo---ri-a in excelsis Deo.

Isaiah 9:2-6

 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. They lived in a land of shadows, but now light is shining on them.  You have given them great joy, Lord; you have made them happy....  A child is born to us!  A son is given to us!  And he will be our ruler.  He will be called, “Wonderful Counselor”, “Mighty God”, “Eternal Father”, “Prince of Peace”.

This is the word of the Lord.

All     Thanks be to God.

Titus 2:11-14

 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

This is the word of the Lord.

All     Thanks be to God.

Luke 2:1-14

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We have seen his glory!

All     Glory be to God in the Highest.

          In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)  And everyone went to their own town to register.  So, Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.  He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All     Praise to you, O Christ.

Creed

All:     I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Hark! The Herald, Angels Sing (380)

Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!"
Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies;
With the angelic host proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem!"

Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ, by highest heav'n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of a virgin's womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as Man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Immanuel!

Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

Hail, the heav'n-born Prince of Peace! Hail, the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings, Ris'n with healing in His wings.
Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth.

Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

Children’s Message

The First Noel

The first Noel the angel did say,
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel! Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star, Shining in the east beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel! Born is the King of Israel.

And by the light of that same star, Three Wise Men came from country far;
To seek for a king was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel! Born is the King of Israel.

This star drew nigh to the northwest, O’er Bethlehem it took its rest;
And there it did both stop and stay, Right over the place where Jesus lay. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel! Born is the King of Israel.

The Lord be with you

All     and also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

All     We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All     It is right to give thanks and praise.

All glory and honor be yours always and everywhere, mighty creator, ever-living God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, who for love of our fallen race humbled himself, was born of the Virgin Mary, and lived as one of us. In this mystery of the Word made flesh you have caused his light to shine in our hearts and have given us peace! Therefore, with the angels of heaven we lift our voices to shout the glory of your name and proclaim our joyful hymn of praise:

All:     Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

          The Prayer of Thanksgiving

Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us to faithfully eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us to in His own testament. Gather us together from the ends of the earth to celebrate, with all the faithful, the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone be all glory, honor, and worship, now and forever.

All     Amen!

Joy to the World (387)

Joy to the world, the Lord is come, Let earth receive her King:
Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room, And heav'n and nature sing,
And heav'n and nature sing, And Heav'n, and Heav’n, and nature sing.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ,
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains, Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, Repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow, Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found, Far as, Far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders, of His love.

Once in royal David's city, Stood a lowly cattle shed,

Where a mother laid her baby, In a manger for His bed:

Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all,

And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall;

With the poor, oppressed, and lowly, Lived on earth our Savior holy.

And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love;

For that child so dear and gentle, Is the Lord in heav'n above;

And He leads His children on, To the place where He is gone.

Not in that poor, lowly stable, With the oxen standing by

Shall we see Him, but in heaven, Set at God's right hand on high.

Then like stars His children, crowned, All in white, His praise will sound!

Invocation

Pastor        En el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo.

All               Amen.

Confession and Forgiveness

Pastor        If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

All              But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Pastor        Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

People       Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

Pastor        Cristo, ten piedad de nosotros.

People       Cristo, ten piedad de nosotros.

Pastor        Señor, ten piedad de nosotros

People       Señor, ten piedad de nosotros

Pastor        Let us then confess our sins to God our Father:

All              Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Pastor        Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

All               Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Pastor        The Lord be with you.

All              And also with you.

Pastor        Let us pray

All              Eternal God, as Mary waited for the birth of your Son, so we wait for his coming in glory; bring us through the birth pangs of this present age to see, with her, our great salvation in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Micah 5:2-5

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."   Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labor gives birth; then the rest of his relatives will return to join their fellow countrymen. He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. And he will be their peace.

This is the word of the Lord.

All              Thanks be to God.

Hebrews 10:5-10

For this reason, when Christ was about to come into the world, he said to God: “You do not want sacrifices and offerings, but you have prepared a body for me. You are not pleased with animals burnt whole on the altar or with sacrifices to take away sins. Then I said, ‘Here I am, to do your will, O God, just as it is written of me in the book of the Law.’” First he said, “You neither want nor are you pleased with sacrifices and offerings or with animals burnt on the altar and the sacrifices to take away sins.” He said this even though all these sacrifices are offered according to the Law. Then he said, “Here I am, O God, to do your will.” So God does away with all the old sacrifices and puts the sacrifice of Christ in their place. Because Jesus Christ did what God wanted him to do, we are all purified from sin by the offering that he made of his own body once and for all.

This is the word of the Lord.

All              Thanks be to God.

Luke 1:39-55

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 1st chapter.

All              Glory to You, O Lord.

Soon afterwards Mary got ready and hurried off to a town in the hill country of Judea. She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby moved within her. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and said in a loud voice, “You are the most blessed of all women, and blessed is the child you will bear! Why should this great thing happen to me, that my Lord’s mother comes to visit me? For as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby within me jumped with gladness. How blessed you are to believe that the Lord’s message to you will come true!”  Mary said, “My heart praises the Lord; my soul is glad because of God my Savior, for he has remembered me, his lowly servant! From now on all people will call me blessed, because of the great things the Mighty God has done for me. His name is holy; from one generation to another he shows mercy to those who honor him. He has stretched out his mighty arm and scattered the proud with all their plans. He has brought down mighty kings from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away with empty hands. He has kept the promise he made to our ancestors, and has come to the help of his servant Israel. He has remembered to show mercy to Abraham and all his descendants forever!”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All              Praise to you, O Christ

Creed

All              I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

The Advent of Our King (331)

The advent of our King, Our prayers must now employ,

And we must hymns of welcome sing, In strains of holy joy.

The everlasting Son, Incarnate deigns to be,

Himself a servant's form puts on, To set His servants free.

Before the dawning day, Let sin's dark deeds be gone,

The sinful self be put away, The new self now put on.

All glory to the Son, Who comes to set us free,

With Father, Spirit, ever one Through all eternity.

Recessional Hymn

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (357)

O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel,

That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, Thou Wisdom from on high, Who ord'rest all things mightily;

To us the path of knowledge show, And teach us in her ways to go.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, Thou Branch of Jesse's tree, Free them from Satan's tyranny

That trust Thy mighty pow'r to save, And give them vict'ry o'er the grave.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, Thou Key of David, come, And open wide our heav'nly home;

Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to misery.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, Thou Dayspring from on high, And cheer us by Thy drawing nigh;

Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death's dark shadows put to flight.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, Desire of nations bind, In one the hearts of all mankind;

Bid Thou our sad divisions cease, And be Thyself our King of Peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!

Israel's strength and consolation, Hope of all the earth Thou art,

Dear desire of ev'ry nation, Joy of ev'ry longing heart.

Born Thy people to deliver; Born a child and yet a king!

Born to reign in us forever, Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.

By Thine own eternal Spirit, Rule in all our hearts alone;

By Thine all-sufficient merit, Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

Pastor        Let us pray

All              God for whom we watch and wait, you sent John the Baptist to prepare the way of your Son: give us courage to speak the truth, to hunger for justice, and to suffer for the cause of right, with Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!

Zephaniah 3:14-18

Sing and shout for joy, people of Israel! Rejoice with all your heart, Jerusalem! The Lord has ended your punishment; he has removed all your enemies. The Lord, the king of Israel, is with you; there is no reason now to be afraid. The time is coming when they will say to Jerusalem, “Do not be afraid, city of Zion! Do not let your hands hang limp! The Lord your God is with you; his power gives you victory. The Lord will take delight in you, and in his love he will give you new life. He will sing and be joyful over you, as joyful as people at a festival.”

This is the word of the Lord.

All              Thanks be to God.

Philippians 4:4-9

May you always be joyful in your union with the Lord. I say it again: rejoice! Show a gentle attitude towards everyone. The Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking with a thankful heart. And God’s peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus. In conclusion, my brothers and sisters, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. Put into practice what you learned and received from me, both from my words and from my actions. And the God who gives us peace will be with you.

This is the word of the Lord.

All              Thanks be to God.

Luke 3:7-18

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 3rd chapter.

All              Glory to You, O Lord.

Crowds of people came out to John to be baptized by him. “You snakes!” he said to them. “Who told you that you could escape from the punishment God is about to send? Do those things that will show that you have repented and turned to God. And don’t start saying among yourselves that Abraham is your ancestor. I tell you that God can take these stones and make descendants for Abraham! The axe is ready to cut down the trees at the roots; every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown in the fire.” The people asked him, “What are we to do, then?”  He answered, “Whoever has two shirts must give one to the man who has none, and whoever has food must share it.”   Some tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what are we to do?”  “Don’t collect more than is legal,” he told them. Some soldiers also asked him, “What about us? What are we to do?”  He said to them, “Don’t take money from anyone by force or accuse anyone falsely. Be content with your pay.”  People’s hopes began to rise, and they began to wonder whether John perhaps might be the Messiah.  So John said to all of them, “I baptize you with water, but someone is coming who is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to untie his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.  He has his winnowing shovel with him, to thresh out all the grain and gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn the chaff in a fire that never goes out.” In many different ways John preached the Good News to the people and urged them to change their ways.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All              Praise to you, O Christ

Creed

All              I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

Amen

Kid Sermon

The King Shall Come at Moring Dawns (348)

The King shall come when morn’g dawns, And light triumphant breaks,

When beauty gilds the eastern hills, And life to joy awakes.

Not as of old a little child, To bear and fight and die,

But crowned with glory like the sun That lights the morning sky.

Oh, brighter than that glorious morn, Shall dawn upon our race

The day when Christ in splendor comes, And we shall see His face.

The King shall come when morning dawns, And light & beauty brings.

Hail, Christ the Lord! Your people pray:  Come quickly, King of kings!

Canten con Alegira

Canten con alegria las alabanzas de Cristo el Rey;

Anden en los caminos que nos mostrara su augusta grey.

Vivan los redimidos en las victorias del vencedor;

Para que todos juntos veamos las glorias del Redentor.

Come let us sing of Jesus,

our blessed Savior, Redeemer King;

Let every heart with full adoration, tribute and homage bring.

He'll be exalted in every tribe and nation the world around;

          Join in the chorus, His banner o'er us,

Christians, proclaim the sound!

Cristo es la luz del mundo, y él que le sigue la luz tendrá;

Cristo es el pan de vida, y él que de él come no morirá.

Cristo es la fuente viva, y él que de él bebe no tendrá sed;

Y si quereis la vida, id a la fuente y allí bebed.

To Thee, O blessed Savior, we lift our voices in grateful praise;

Joining our hearts sincerely with full devotion, song we raise.

Soon every knee in earth and in heav'n

shall bow down before thy name--

Name ever glorious, o'er all victorious,

through endless years the same.

Offering

Service of the Sacrament

As we approach the altar for communion, please be mindful of others as you come forward. Those sitting on the pulpit side will receive first followed by those on the lectern side. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we adjust to liturgical transitions.

Pastor        The Lord be with you.

All              And also with you.

Pastor        Lift up your hearts.

All              We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor        Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All               It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Pastor        It is truly right, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give You thanks, holy Father, eternal God. From sunrise to sunset this day is holy, for Christ has risen from the tomb and has scattered the darkness of death with light that will not fade. The risen Lord walks with us and makes himself known in the breaking of the bread. And though the night will overtake the day, you summon us to live in endless light, the unending Sabbath of the Lord. So, with choirs of angels and with the heavenly host, we proclaim your glory!

All               Amen!

                                                       The Prayer of Thanksgiving

Pastor        Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy, we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Amen!

Lamb of God

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace.

The Consecration

The Acclamation and The Invitation

Pastor        As often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again.

All              Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Pastor        Behold the Lamb of God, behold Jesus, who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

All              Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.

Thank the Lord and sing His praise;

Tell everyone what He has done.

Let everyone who seeks the Lord,

Rejoice, and proudly bear His name.

Post-Communion Prayer

All              We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You, that of Your mercy, You would strengthen us in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Recessional Hymn

Rise Shine You People (825)

Rise, shine, you people! Christ the Lord has entered

Our human story; God in him is centered.

He comes to us, by death and sin surrounded

with grace unbounded.

See how he sends the pow’rs of evil reeling;

He brings us freedom, light and life and healing.

All men and women, who by guilt are driven, now are forgiven.

Come, celebrate; your banners high unfurling,

Your songs and prayers against the darkness hurling.

To all the world go out and tell the story of Jesus’ glory.

Tell how the Father sent the Son to save us.

Tell of the Song, who life and freedom gave us.

Tell how the Spirit calls from ev’ry nation God’s new creation.
