Third Sunday after Pentecost

Watch Video

Greeting and Welcome

The congregation stands and faces the back of the sanctuary. We begin with a procession with the cross leading the way, representing our life in Christ-our journey from death to life. Some bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of salvation.

Alleluia, Alleluia! Hearts to Heaven (477)

Alleluia, alleluia! Hearts to heav'n and voices raise;

Sing to God a hymn of gladness, Sing to God a hymn of praise;

He who on the cross a victim, For the world's salvation bled

Jesus Christ, the King of Glory, Now is risen from the dead.

Alleluia, Christ is risen! Death at last has met defeat

See the ancient powers of evil in confusion and retreat;

Once he died, and once was buried: now he lives forevermore,

Jesus Christ the world's Redeemer, Whom we worship and adore.

Alleluia, alleluia! Glory be to God on high;

Alleluia to the Savior Who has gained the victory;

Alleluia to the Spirit, Fount of love and sanctity!

Alleluia, alleluia to the triune Majesty.

Invocation

          En el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo.

All     Amen.

Confession and Forgiveness

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us

All     But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

All     Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

Cristo, ten piedad de nosotros.

All     Cristo, ten piedad de nosotros.

Señor, ten piedad de nosotros

All     Señor, ten piedad de nosotros

Silence is Kept

Let us then confess our sins to God our Father:

All     Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

All     Amen.

The Prayer of the Day

All     God our savior, look on this wounded world in pity and in power; hold us fast to your promises of peace won for us by your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Scripture Readings

Isaiah 65:1-9

“I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not call on my name,  I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’ All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations—a people who continually provoke me to my very face,

offering sacrifices in gardens and burning incense on altars of brick; who sit among the graves and spend their nights keeping secret vigil;

who eat the flesh of pigs, and whose pots hold broth of impure meat; who say, ‘Keep away; don’t come near me, for I am too sacred for you!’ Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day. “See, it stands written before me: I will not keep silent but will pay back in full; I will pay it back into their laps—both your sins and the sins of your ancestors,” says the Lord. “Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains and defied me on the hills, I will measure into their laps the full payment for their former deeds.” This is what the Lord says: “As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes and people say, ‘Don’t destroy it, there is still a blessing in it,’ so will I do in behalf of my servants; I will not destroy them all.  I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, and from Judah those who will possess my mountains; my chosen people will inherit them, and there will my servants live.

This is the word of the Lord.

All     Thanks be to God.

Galatians 3:23-4:7

Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. So, the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.  So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces[b] of the world. But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So, you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

This is the word of the Lord.

All     Thanks be to God

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 8th chapter.

All     Glory to You, O Lord.

Luke 8:26-39

They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places. Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.  When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left. The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All     Praise to you, O Christ.

The Creed

All     I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection X of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found; He is my light, my strength, my song;

This Cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

What heights of love, what depths of peace,

When fears are stilled, when strivings cease:

My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe;

This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save;

‘Till on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied,

For every sin on Him was laid, here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay, light of the world by darkness slain;

Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again.

And as He stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me

For I am His, and He is mine, bought by the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death: this is the power of Christ in me;

From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny,

No power of hell, no scheme of man can ever pluck me from His hand

‘Till He returns, or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

Padre Nuestro, que estás en el Cielo

Santificado, santificado sea tu nombre.

Vénganos tu reino, Señor.  Hágase tu santa voluntad

En la tierra como en el Cielo se hace tu santa voluntad.

Padre Nuestro, que estás en el Cielo

Santificado, santificado sea tu nombre

Danos hoy, danoslo Señor, nuestro pan, el pan de cada día.

Y perdona nuestras deudas así como nosotros perdonamos.

Padre Nuestro, que estás en el Cielo

Santificado, santificado sea tu nombre

No nos dejes caer en tentación, antes bien líbranos del mal.

No nos dejes caer en tentación, líbranos del mal.

The Service of the Sacrament

          The Lord be with you.

All     And also with you.

          Lift up your hearts.

All     We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All     It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.  From sunrise to sunset this day is holy, for Christ has risen from the tomb and scattered the darkness of death with light that will not fade. This day the risen Lord walks with your gathered people, unfolds for us your word, and makes himself known in the breaking of the bread. And though the night will overtake this day you summon us to live in endless light, the unending sabbath of the Lord. And so, with choirs of angels and with all the heavenly host, we forever proclaim your glory:

All     Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Amen!

The Prayer of Thanksgiving

Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy, we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us to faithfully eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us to in His own testament. Gather us together from the ends of the earth to celebrate, with all the faithful, the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone be all glory, honor, and worship, now and forever.

All     Amen!

The Consecration

The Acclamation and The Invitation

All     Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Behold the Lamb of God, behold Jesus, who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

All     Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.

          La paz del Señor sea con ustedes.

All     Y también contigo
