Meditation for Christmas Day

Almighty God, you have given us your only-begotten Son

to take our nature upon him and as at this time to be born of a pure virgin: grant that we, who have been born again and made your children by grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

The Welcome

La Binevenida

The congregation stands and faces the back of the sanctuary. We begin with a procession as the cross leads the way, representing our life in Christ – our journey from death to life. Some bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of salvation

Processional Hymn

Once in Royal David's City (376)

Once in royal David's city, Stood a lowly cattle shed,

Where a mother laid her baby, In a manger for His bed:

Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all,

And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall;

With the poor, oppressed, and lowly, Lived on earth our Savior holy.

And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love;

For that child so dear and gentle, Is the Lord in heav'n above;

And He leads His children on, To the place where He is gone.

Not in that poor, lowly stable, With the oxen standing by

Shall we see Him, but in heaven, Set at God's right hand on high.

Then like stars His children, crowned, All in white, His praise will sound!

Invocation and Confession

La Invocación Y La Confesión

En el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo.

All     Amen.

Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you

All     and also with you.

Christ the Light of the World has come to dispel the darkness of our hearts. Let us turn to the Light and confess our sins:

Silence is kept.

          Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

All     Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

          Cristo, ten piedad de nosotros.

All     Cristo, ten piedad de nosotros.

          Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

All     Señor, ten piedad de nosotros.

God our Father, you sent your Son full of grace and truth: forgive our failure to receive him.

All     Lord, have mercy.

Jesus our Savior, you were born in poverty and laid in a manger: forgive our greed and rejection of your ways.

All     Christ, have mercy.

Spirit of God, your servant Mary responded joyfully to your call: forgive the hardness of our hearts.

All     Lord, have mercy.

May the God of all healing and forgiveness draw you to himself, that you may behold the glory of his Son, the Word made flesh, and be cleansed from all your sins, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All     Amen.

Prayer of the Day

All     Lord Jesus Christ, your birth at Bethlehem draws us to kneel in wonder at heaven touching earth: accept our heartfelt praise as we worship you, our Savior and our eternal God. Amen!

It Came upon the Midnight Clear (366)

It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old,

From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold:

"Peace on the earth, goodwill to all, From heav'n's all-gracious king."

The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing.

All you, beneath your heavy load, By care and guilt bent low,

Who toil along a dreary way, With painful steps and slow:

Look up, for golden is the hour, Come swiftly on the wing,

The Prince was born to bring you peace; Of Him the angels sing.

For lo, the days have come to pass, By prophets seen of old,

When down into the circling years, Came Christ as was foretold.

His word of peace shall to the earth, God's ancient promise bring,

And all who take this gift will hear, The song the angels sing.

Isaiah 52:7-10

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” Listen! Your watchmen lift their voices; together they shout for joy. When the Lord returns to Zion, they will see it with their own eyes.  Burst into songs of joy together, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord has comforted his people, he has redeemed Jerusalem. The Lord will lay bare his holy arm in the sight of the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of God.

This is the word of the Lord.

All     Thanks be to God.

Titus 3:4-7

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So, he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”? And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.”

This is the word of the Lord.

All     Thanks be to God.

Luke 2:1-14

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We have seen his glory!

All     Glory be to God in the Highest!

          In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)  And everyone went to their own town to register.  So, Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.  He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All     Praise to you, O Christ.

Creed

All     I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Children’s Message

God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen

God rest you merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay,

Remember Christ our Saviour, Was born on Christmas Day

To save us all from Satan's pow'r, When we were gone astray.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

In Bethlehem, in Jury, This blessed babe was born

And laid within a manger, Upon this blessed morn

To which his mother Mary, Nothing did take in scorn.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

From God our heav'nly Father, A blessed angel came;

And unto certain shepherds, Brought tidings of the same:

How that in Bethlehem was born, The son of God by name.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

Fear not, then said the Angel, Let nothing you affright,

This day is born a Saviour, Of virtue, power and might;

So frequently to vanquish all, The friends of Satan quite.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place,

And with true love and brotherhood, Each other now embrace;

This holy tide of Christmas, All other doth deface.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

All     It is right to give thanks and praise.

All glory and honor be yours always and everywhere, mighty creator, ever-living God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, who for love of our fallen race humbled himself, was born of the Virgin Mary, and lived as one of us. In this mystery of the Word made flesh you have caused his light to shine in our hearts and have given us peace! Therefore, with the angels of heaven we lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name and sing respond with our joyful hymn of praise:

All     Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

          The Prayer of Thanksgiving

Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy, we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us to faithfully eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us to in His own testament. Gather us together from the ends of the earth to celebrate, with all the faithful, the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone be all glory, honor, and worship, now and forever.

All: Amen!

Recessional Hymn

Go Tell it on the Mountain (388)

Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and ev'rywhere;

Go tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born!

While shepherds kept their watching, O'er silent flocks by night,

Behold, throughout the heavens, There shone a holy light.

Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and ev'rywhere;

Go tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born!

The shepherds feared and trembled, When lo, above the earth

Rang out the angel chorus, That hailed our Savior's birth.

Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and ev'rywhere;

Go tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born!

Down in a lonely manger, The humble Christ was born;

And God set us salvation, That blessed Christmas morn.

Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and ev'rywhere;

Go tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born!
